Harley Davidson celebrates its 110th anniversary this weekend with a series of events in Rome and Ostia. Most people think of mopeds in Italy not motorcycles, but Italy is consistently one of Harley Davidson’s top ten markets. Over 100,000 hog enthusiasts are in the city with 35,000 riders from all over the world. The rumble of the engines has drifted through the Eternal City day and night.
The four-day event includes exhibitions, demo rides, food and music. Saturday morning started with a parade of bikes lead by police escort through the center of the city. Locals and unsuspecting tourists were treated to waves from the bikers revving their engines. The Harley Davidson riders are becoming mini-celebrities as they pose for photos and let people sit on their hogs. Even the Vatican is getting in on the act. Harley Davidson presented Pope Francis with a commemorative black leather jacket as well as two classic Harley Davidson cycles (one will be auctioned to benefit charity). The weekend will culminate this morning with a blessing of 1000 motorcycles during a ceremony at St. Peter’s Square. Throughout the year Harley Davidson is celebrating their 110th anniversary with events in eleven countries and six continents.
