A special Pentecost Mass at the Pantheon was celebrated on Sunday, May 19, 2013. The Pentecost is a feast in remembrance of the Holy Spirit’s descent upon the Virgin Mary and the Apostles of Jesus. After mass at the Santa Church of Maria ad Martyres, more commonly known as the Pantheon, a shower of rose petals cascaded through the oculus. The petals are meant to represent the Holy Spirit’s descent to earth, the color of the petals are red in commemoration of the tongues of flame in which the Holy Spirit descended on the first Pentecost. The color is also a tribute to the blood of the martyrs. This extraordinary event is held yearly.
